After World War Two (WWII), Germany was divided into four parts, one for each country that won WWII. The West half of Germany was ruled by the democracies. The Eastern half was ruled by the Soviet Union and was Communist. A wall divided the city of Berlin in half. This was the notorious Berlin Wall. It was guarded and many needed passes to travel to the other side. Families and friends were separated. It was as if the wall was built overnight. The wall was in place as of 1961. It included guard towers, dogs, and barbed wire. The decision to tear down the wall was made in 1989, the wall was finally torn down in 1990 to much joy of the east Berliners. It was a good day all around for Berlin.
