One thing that helped with the downfall of the Soviet Union was President Ronald Reagan. He greatly influenced Mr. Gorbachev into giving up some of his power to basically kill the union. The two developed a warm relationship and influenced each other for the better. Because of Reagan, Gorbachev won Time's person of the year and person of the decade. Without President Ronald Reagan, we might still have a Soviet Union today.

About the Fall
During the Cold War, the United States was indirectly fighting the Soviet Union through wars like Korea and Vietnam. We were in a slow war with them. We built many weapons, especially nuclear ones, yet none were ever used. Communist countries no longer wanted to be a part of the Soviet Union. They eventually left right before Christmas of 1991. That was when Gorbachev officially announced that the Soviet Union was no more. By the extreme Communists, there was obviously some protests, but the leaders could no longer hold onto the once powerful union. A cold time in history was over. The Soviet Union was no more.
