There was a lot of controversy when George W. Bush was elected. Gore, the democratic candidate, won the popular vote, while Bush won the electoral votes. There was controversy over whether or not Florida’s vote was fair, and they ended up declaring Bush the winner after a recount. Bush was president when the 9/11 terrorist attacks happened. Bush’s response was the creation of the Homeland Security Department, the Patriot Act and the authorization of intelligence gathering that used to include monitoring international phone calls made by U.S. citizens. Another thing was that international groups were created to seek out and eliminate terrorist groups including Al Qaeda. He decided that military conflict would be used in Afghanistan and Iraq, and thus the Iraq war starts.
"Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve."
